About this music

This song has stayed in mind ever since I first heard it. Such a beautiful composition by A R Rahman and such a lovely rendition by Javed Ali. Here is my version and do let me know your comments.

Hey Joe, nice to see you cover this song.. I did observe quite a few things though..

* Additional variations were not necessary.. “Bahara hai”,”Phool se”,”Nazare hain”.. Some places during the verses too
* I would like to hear your voice being brighter and crisp.. At least for this song! You could decrease on the volume levels a little and increase the treble oh the vocal track

Rest everything was done neatly.. You’ve reached the heights where these smalls things also matter.. So, I thought I would tell you!! Great work buddy.. Keep it up!! Cheers.. \m/

Hey, thanks Deepak. :)

I tend to put my own variations for each cover song I do. It doesn’t happen consciously, but somehow… I think even though we are doing covers, we should try to bring on our own flavor (without killing the soul of the song though :) ).

Will definitely keep your other comments in mind. For one thing, I wasn’t totally comfortable with this song, especially in the high notes. :-) But I love it so much that I wanted to cover it. Hehe…

Thanks man.

Wow!
Goes straight to my favs.

Jo,
Great job overall, and especially on the high notes in the antara (paas hain phir bhi paas nahin), coz that’s where a lot of singers mess up. This song is deceptively complicated, and the landing notes are tricky. You have done an outstanding job I must say.

If I have to be over-critical, I’d say the pronunciation could be better. And maybe a mild de-esser will help with sibilance. But that’s about it.

A bit of extra delay on the last two words in the end (chilman mein) was a nice little touch; a tip or two from the original version? :)

Nitin –

Hehe… yeah. I just added some more echo to those two words. :) About my Hindi pronunciation, I am trying to improve with each song. Your detailed feedback will help. And I didn’t get what you mean by “And maybe a mild de-esser will help with sibilance”. Please explain.

Shashank –

Thank you so much! :)

Joseph, when you apply compression to a vocal track, it usually leads to the ’s’-es jumping out in the mix. Sometimes it’s because of the mic one uses (not to say that cheaper mics cause sibilance and more high-range ones don’t, but, for example, condenser mics sometimes cause more sibilance than dynamic ones). A de-esser is a plug-in which tones sibilance down.

Let’s stop the technical discussion now, it’s taking away from the brilliance of your rendition. :)

Thanks Nithin. :) I use Cool Edit Pro for mixing and I am unfamiliar with much of the mixing technique. What I do is I add a “Tight and Close” reverb effect and Echo effect. I don’t know what else to do on the track. :( Should learn more of those mixing techniques. :)

Hi Joseph,
Felt very good listening to the track. You surely have a very well developed voice texture. There are only very little pronounciation issues which will be eliminated with practice. That aside, I have no complaints, I enjoyed it a great deal. Keep up the good work.
Cheers:)
