Today's Guest is "Sanour Sunny Mohammad"
Shashank Gokhale posted about 1 month ago in Interview Of The WeekShashank: : “Now a days Music is ‘also’ about the clarity, technicalities and different effects on sound. When we listen to songs we can enjoy music to maximum extent as Sound is treated very well. But people who work behind this get overshadowed by people who perform. So this is one effort to highlight and focus on people who are the real task force behind any SOUND PROCESSING …
Today we have with us Sanour Mohommad, nick named as SUNNY on Muziboo. Sunny is known for his straight and meaningful comments which make a lot of sense from a music point of view. Also recently Sunny started an online collaboration project called ‘UNITED WE STAND ’ which included lot of Muziboo Musicians who worked together with Sunny to make a Great Song against Terrorism in the world. I guess that was a great gesture from Sunny to start this idea of first ever composed collaboration on Muziboo…
Shashank: Sunny, All of us are interested in knowing about you?
Sunny: : “Well, I am a sound engineer, with not so sound brains :). I started working as an assistant sound engineer at the age of 15, and at 16 I joined as a chief sound engineer at some other studio. My journey started from Mumbai. 2 years in Mumbai and then 5 years at Hyderabad, and now back to Mumbai since 1 year. Currently I am working at Mumbai with music director Sandeep Chowta. Learning music with him at the time of work. I even arrange my own stuff with keyboards and rhythms. Can’t do for others, coz I don’t no much about arranging or playing. And if people bear to take my singing, I do sing sometimes :) “
Shashank: How music Start in your life?
Sunny: : “Music started as a carrier. Wondering why I started so early? Because of financial stresses and an urge to work. I was interested in Music, but never knew that I would land up so soon.”
Shashank: I guess that’s a very Brave move but did you face some problems or non-cooperation from your family?
Sunny: : “I didn’t face any problems from my family. In fact they supported me a lot. Parent’s not supporting? That’s history now. I hate these TV reality shows, but thanks to them that now every parent wants their child to learn singing at least. Still lots of them don’t send their children for learning instruments. Field is uncertain for sure, till the time you have not reached perfection. Again normal people don’t know all the branches in Music industry. It’s a glamour field and so they only know singers and music directors. but the technicians, the musicians behind a song making process, do earn well. I suggest parents to send their kids for learning instruments as well as vocals so that they can do any kind of work in Music Industry.”
Shashank: Do you have any formal training in Sound engineering?
Sunny: : “I ruined my teachers in school at the time of learning. So no one dared to teach me anything, ever. Hahaha !. I mean, I never took any formal training, all practicals.”
Shashank: Oh!!! But do you suggest people to go for training?
Sunny: : “Yeah. Miracle happens only with few. I don’t want people to take inspiration from me or any other people, who sing\play\work without any formal training in music. Learning is important for sure. Else it will take ages for you to get the basics. You will be lacking few things, especially, for singers\musicians.”
Shashank: What kind of Music you like?
Sunny: : “Well, totally depends on my mood. I would first prefer Indian music than any western music. From India forms of music, I like Thumris, Ghazals, Punjabi Sufi (not the Aatif space ;) ) and Bengali music. Then from Bollywood, I like A.R. Rahman’s, my boss Sandeep Chowta’s and Ismail darbar’s work. They are into other space of music. :) From west, I like Hip-hop and alternative rock. These days I am very much influenced by JAZZ , because I have been living with it.”
Shashank: What are technical things necessary to know for Music now a days?
Sunny: : “Hmmm…Let me see how many I can count on my fingers..1, 2, 3, 4, 5…....... And it goes on. Music and technicalities in music are endless. Basic tempo, pitching ideas for singers and musicians and sound engineers are a must. it’s better to have software ideas also. Helps u to record you and judge it.”
Shashank: What would you Suggest other Musicians…if they want to follow your path
Sunny: : “Hmmm.. Please don’t follow me by not learning basics :). Listen to music from the world. If u practices for 2 hours a day, listen to songs at least 4 hours a day. Don’t follow reality shows, 90% of them (not the singers, but the shows) are fake. Learn full basic and then try and make an entry in the Music Industry.”
Shashank: How your Family Support to you…
Sunny: : “Hmm well a good one. Let me tell u all a thing. My elder brother is also a sound engineer. He is partner in a studio named Premier digital at Mumbai. This is the place where Rahman even works, if he is at Mumbai. Half of Jodha Akbar’s work was done there. So at home, it’s more like an office, but not a boring one. We have a small studio setup at home and we never give up talking about music and technical things at home. Even being a lot bugged and annoyed by us, my Bhabhi supports us too. And my mom and dad are never bored by our talks and works at home :) “
Shashank: What do you think about these days Music
Sunny: : “Music has no language and time. If we say these day;, are you particularly talking about Bollywood? No comments on anyone. Good music and bad music never exist. It’s all about how you think and what music you like.”
Shashank: Do you have any memorable moment in your Music Life which you want to share with us ?
Sunny: : “Yeah lots of them. There is nothing like one. My most memorable thing is working with Sandeep Chowta. I admired him a lot. His work which really inspired me was ‘MITTI’ . By god’s grace I am working with him. I did few sessions with Rahman too, at my brother’s studio. Talking with them is thrilling. Think what I would be feeling when working with the people whom I admire a lot. I can’t explain this.”
Shashank: What’s your Future Plan?
Sunny: : “Work till I die. That too in music. Hope one day I could learn more in music and work and make more and more music. It’s the biggest achievement for me. The best field to work in. A field where I can express myself by singing or making music.”
Shashank: “Very Few People show Courage to stay in uncertain field and make it appear certain by their hardwork and passion…Sunny is one of them…We wish him Best of Luck in his JOURNEY of MUSIC .”

Hey.. This is sweeeeeet!! Quite a few good things found here.. About the reality shows on TV, I totally agree with Sunny cuz I have seen it myself.. I was a participant during Coke V pop stars 2.. I had been all the way to Mumbai just for the auditions and I’ve seen what goes on over there!! Since that day, I lost the interest in such shows.. Of course, the singers who participate (At least in a few shows that I’ve watched) are terrific.. As far as Indian idol or fame gurukul is concerned, my one word review would be “Crap!” |

Hi Sunny, Great interview. It takes some maturity to ask people not to follow your steps :) As you said, miracles dont happen with everybody. Its good for newcomers to take the tested route of formal training. |

Nice interview. I really liked the part about parents being supportive (other than TV reality shows) :)
Keep up the good work Shashank!
